Langkawi is an archipelago that consists of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, south of Thailand, 30km off the mainland coast of northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. Tourists flock here for the delightful beaches, superb resorts and refreshing nature-based activities. The best beaches include Pantai Cenang, Burau Bay, Pantai Kok and Pantai Datai.

Langkawi is more than captivating beauty ~ it is also a land steep in legends and shrouded in mystery. The best known legend is of Mashuri, a pretty maiden who lived some 200 years ago. Executed for a crime she did not commit, she laid a curse on the land, that "...Langkawi shall not prosper for seven generations to come."

Langkawi's most prominent mountains, Gunung Macinchang and Gunung Raya, and a whole series of towns and villages are said to named after a local legend. The story tells the tale of a wedding between two families of giants, with Mat Raya's son wanting to marry Mat Cincang's daughter. During the wedding feast, a fight broke out  because the son was caught flirting with another woman. During the fight, pots and pans were flung, and a pot of gravy (kuah) was broken. The place where the gravy was spilled became known as Kuah and where the crockery (belanga) was broken (pecah) became Kampung Belanga Pecah.
